Chapter History
Since the Sorority's inception in 1922, the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has been providing service and support to the Indianapolis community within the guidance of our slogan, "Greater Service, Greater Progress." Community Service, leadership training, and education of our youth have continued to be the focal points of our programming efforts over the years.
To learn more about Alpha Sigma Chapter, you must first go back to the beginning...Alpha Chapter.

At first, Alpha Chapter was just a club that encouraged higher education. After much research with Attorney Robert Lee Brokenburr as the legal adviser, the Articles of Incorporation were filed in Indianapolis in December of 1922.

Growth was steady and members were enthusiastic. Worthwhile projects were sponsored to aid the community, to establish scholarships, to develop talents, to train leadership and to promote finer womanhood. Lucy O. Maxey Brooks was chairman of the Butler Committee during the 1920's and Alpha Chapter was granted by Butler University on December 30, 1929.

Mary Lou Little wrote the pledge for Alpha Chapter and now it is the National Pledge. Cubena McClure and Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson designed the official badge that we treasure.

Alpha Sigma Chapter, the first graduate chapter, was organized within Alpha Chapter. Because of the small number of Alpha members, the meetings continued to be joint.

Alpha Sigma boasts of the fact that a number of Grand Officers have been selected from its ranks.

"Faith in God gives steady patience and needed courage to endure as a good soldier of righteousness." So as dedicated women, Alpha Sigma pledges to continue in the faith prayerfully and to aspire for higher goals.
