About the event
To commemorate 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service, the City of Indianapolis will honor Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated with a street sign dedication Friday, November 11 at 10am ET. The roadway on Boulevard Place between 49th and 52nd Street will now be called Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Way. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young African American educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure. Initially formed as a club for teachers, the group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter at Butler University. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's leadership and members continue to be dedicated to greater service, greater progress internationally, and our organization’s steadfast legacy is illuminated in these past 100 years of women’s development and education. Our sisters’ hands have been active, and hearts have been open for 100 years of demonstrated excellence. Now is the time to reflect, honor, and celebrate in Indianapolis, Indiana, the city that the organization was founded.
